Eye Bank
The Central Ohio Lions Eye Bank is a non-profit agency that strives to open greater opportunities for sight restoration. The Eye Bank recovers and prepares human donor corneas for transplant surgeries, and plays a vital role in advancing both eye research and physician education. Contributions from private donors and Lions Clubs help us maintain the high quality and state-of-the-art technology that are the hallmarks of the Eye Bank’s accredited laboratory.
As a unique community resource, we are proud to partner with The Eye Center in its visionary efforts to create a singular facility offering a wealth of eye care services. To learn more about the Central Ohio Lions Eye Bank, please visit www.coleb.org

Research
The mission of the Central Ohio Lions Eye Bank includes providing donor eyes for corneal transplant, eye research and medical education.
Eye care, or ophthalmology, is a growing field in which physicians and researchers are actively discovering new approaches and techniques to treat and prevent eye diseases. Do you have a family member or a friend with glaucoma, macular degeneration, or retinitis caused by diabetes? The treatment, care, and prevention of all of these depends on eye donors to advance the knowledge of how the eye functions, and what happens to impair its function.

Donating
How can I become an eye donor?
In Ohio, an individual can enter his/her name in the Donor Registry at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Recent state laws now confirm that registered donors have consented to donation and that no additional consent from the next-of-kin must be documented at the time of the donor’s death. Completion of the Registry form creates a legal record of your consent to be a donor of anatomical gifts. You may choose to donate any body parts that could help others, or indicate specific parts (eyes, heart, kidneys, for example) that you will donate upon your death. You may specify whether you want to donate for any purpose authorized by law, for transplantation, research, medical education, or therapy. You may even complete this form to indicate that you do not want to be a donor. Tell your family you are a donor. They will be asked to make the decision if you are not in the Donor Registry.
Please see the Central Ohio Lions Eye Bank website for more information.

Who can be an eye donor?
More people are eligible to be eye donors than to donate any other body parts. Eyes can be donated regardless of the donor’s age or whether or not he/she wore glasses or contact lenses. This is because donor eyes are needed for eye research and medical education as well as for corneal transplantation. When eyes are donated, they must be very carefully evaluated, along with the medical history of the donor, to determine whether the corneas can be transplanted. Even if the corneas can not be transplanted, the donor eyes can make an important contribution to the advancement of eye care.
Making Charitable Contributions
As a non-profit, 501 (c) (3) organization facing the rapidly-rising expenses in medicine, the Central Ohio Lions Eye Bank works to keep costs contained, so that any patient who needs a corneal transplant will have access to a cornea for their surgery.
